CANADIAN INTERNATIONAL TRADE TRIBUNAL INITIATES EXPIRY REVIEW
REFINED SUGAR FROM THE UNITED STATES, DENMARK, GERMANY,
THE NETHERLANDS, THE UNITED KINGDOM AND THE EUROPEAN UNION
Ottawa, Ontario, February 17, 2010—The Canadian International Trade Tribunal today initiated an expiry review of its orders made on November 2, 2005, in Expiry Review No. RR-2004-007, concerning the dumping of refined sugar from the United States, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, and the subsidizing of refined sugar from the European Union.
On June 17, 2010, the Canada Border Services Agency will determine if there is a likelihood of resumed or continued dumping and subsidizing. In the event of a positive determination, the Tribunal will determine, on November 1, 2010, whether the continued or resumed dumping and subsidizing are likely to result in injury or retardation.
The Tribunal is an independent quasi-judicial body that reports to Parliament through the Minister of Finance. It hears cases on dumped and subsidized imports, complaints about federal government procurement, appeals of customs and excise tax rulings and safeguard complaints. When requested by the federal government, the Tribunal also provides advice on other economic, trade and tariff matters.
Any interested person, association or government that wishes to participate in the Tribunal’s expiry review may do so by filing a Notice of Participation.
